脫氮硫桿菌分布很廣，可在10～37℃，pH為4.0～9.5的條件下生長，適生長溫度為28～30℃，適pH 6.5～7.0。脫氮硫桿菌對高鹽度環(huán)境的適應(yīng)性不強。脫氮硫桿菌能夠利用的氮源范圍很廣，可以是氨鹽、硝酸鹽、亞硝酸鹽以及氨基酸等，在厭氧條件下，硝酸鹽又被作為電子受體而被還原。在硫循環(huán)體系中，好氧條件下，脫氮硫桿菌以氧為電子受體氧化還原硫化合物而獲得能量。厭氧條件下，脫氮硫桿菌以反硝化反應(yīng)的方式同時參與硫、氮循環(huán),以硝酸鹽中的氧來氧化硫化合物。
